Houdini Racetrack Builder

This project was a collection of tools created in Houdini for use in Unreal Engine. There are four total tools in this toolset the each serve a different purpose in the racetrack creation. Each one has a link to the breakdown on how they were developed.

In this post I’ll showcase what each tool is capable of and they can be used to create a fully playable environment in a very short amount of time. The track below took under 5 minutes to assemble.

Main Drive Through

In total this entire project took roughly 100 hours. The track tool was originally started over the summer. It was finished with the addition of the other tools over the period of 8 weeks.

Track

This tool uses a curve input to create a fully customizable racetrack.

1.) Draw the initial shape of the track

2.) Adjust the height and the banking levels

3.) You now have a playable level!

Grandstands

This tool automatically creates a default grandstand with many customization options. users are able to toggle between different collision modes during the generation process.

Fence/Barriers

This tool uses a curve input to place jersey barriers, with the option for an adjustable fence.

Tire Stacks

This tool uses a curve input to create a row of tires with customizable stacking.
